Armor for May dolls, the undefeated Honda Tadakatsu, in excellent condition, made by Yuzan
This is a May doll decoration that reproduces the armor of Honda Tadakatsu, one of the four great generals of the Tokugawa clan. When we think of Honda Tadakatsu, we think of the large rosary hanging from his robe, and the helmet with antlers and lion bites.
Honda Tadakatsu was known as one of the most brave warriors among Ieyasu's loyal retainers, and was known as a military commander who never sustained a wound in any battle in his life. His famous large rosary is said to have been a memorial for defeated enemies, and was highly praised by later generations for its decorative qualities, as it represents the samurai's view of impermanence in the Warring States period.
His bravery was so well known that Takeda Shingen said, "There are two things that Ieyasu surpasses. The head of the Tang Dynasty is Honda (Heihachiro) Tadakatsu." Oda Nobunaga also called him "a man of strength who has achieved both success and success," and Toyotomi Hideyoshi called him "the greatest warrior of all time in Japan."
He fought in 57 battles throughout his life, but never received a single sword wound. His bravery was so great that he was spoken of as a model for samurai throughout the Edo period.
Many people who purchase May dolls of Sengoku period warlords have a particular preference for the warlord who served as the model for the doll, but many people who purchase Honda Tadakatsu's armor fall in love at first sight, even if they don't know much about Tadakatsu himself, and become even more enamoured after learning about his life and other details, leading them to purchase it.
The Boys' Festival began in the Heian period as a festival for displaying May dolls and praying for boys to avoid misfortune. By displaying a brave and courageous May doll, parents hope that their children will be able to ward off impending misfortune just like the warrior.
"folding screen"
The folding screen, with its beautiful wood grain, features a dragon and a tiger. When the dragon is placed on the right and the tiger on the left, they have been depicted in many paintings as a motif of peace and prosperity. The dragon is associated with the blue dragon and is a motif that is loved as the guardian deity of the east, while the tiger is associated with the white tiger and is a motif that is loved as the guardian deity of the west.
The May dolls are an important Japanese custom that comes from a time when things were not so abundant and lives were lost much more easily than they are now, to cherish newborn lives and pray for the safe growth of these little lives into adults. Please celebrate with a carefully crafted May doll.
『Bow and Sword』
The brown sheath is not plastic, but a genuine wooden sheath.
The sheath is finished with a topcoat technique called pear-skin coating, in which gold powder is mixed and applied.
In the May Festival doll industry, the standard combination of a sword and a bow and arrow is the bow and sword.
This sword and bow set also comes with a spear covered with fur, making it one of the few rare sword and bow sets with spear in the industry.
