A bamboo tiger armor decoration for May dolls. A national treasure of Kasuga Taisha Shrine, a red-laced armor.
This is a faithful replica of the red-laced armor housed in the treasure hall of Kasuga Taisha Shrine, a World Heritage Site.
Among the armors housed at Kasuga Taisha Shrine, the Akaito-Ido armor is designated as a national treasure and has been featured in various media not only in Japan but also around the world.
The gauntlets of the armor feature tigers on bamboo, created using a technique known as chrysanthemum and butterfly metalwork. This design was very popular during the Kamakura period, and the only one that remains intact today is that of Kasuga Taisha Shrine.
According to legend, this red-laced armor was donated by Minamoto no Yoshitsune, according to Kasuga Taisha Shrine. It is called "Bamboo Tiger Armor" because it features bamboo and sparrows on the helmet's neck guard, and bamboo and tigers on the gauntlets.
The tiger is a motif that represents a brave warrior, the bamboo represents celebration of growth as it grows straight, and the sparrow is a motif that represents warding off evil spirits as it pecks away misfortune.
Sparrows also symbolize good harvests, prosperity for the family, and safety in the home, and bamboo and sparrows are used as a common family crest by the Date, Uesugi, and Nagao families.
The May dolls for the Boy's Festival are not just for the first festival, but also a big message for the child's future. Even if the child is stubborn and doesn't understand anything now, the day will come when he or she will be able to talk, walk, and understand many things.
There will come a day when you start to wonder, "Why did they choose this May doll?" or "Why is my May doll this shape?"
When you grow up and have children of your own, the day will surely come when you will remember the May doll you received.
Until the day when people think about the feelings of the people who gave them the May dolls and feel grateful, the May dolls carry invisible messages and add color to the festival.
A May doll is the perfect gift to celebrate growth and endless possibilities for the future.
The real red-laced armor is on display at the Treasure Hall of Kasuga Taisha Shrine.
Going to Kasuga Taisha Shrine with your grown child one day and discovering, "There's my family's armor here!" will be a great way to sow the seeds of joy for the future.
『Bow and Sword』
The brown sheath is not plastic but made of wood for an authentic look.
